Rheem Capacitor Replacement: The San Jose Owner’s Guide

We stock Rheem-compatible run and start capacitors on our trucks and replace them the same day in San Jose, with most jobs running $175 – $340 installed depending on the capacitor type and how many your Rheem unit needs. The way owners usually find out is a system that hums but won’t start, or an AC that trips its breaker on a hot afternoon in Almaden Valley. A capacitor is a small cylinder that stores the electrical kick your compressor and fan motors need to spin up, and when it fails, the whole system stalls. The good news: it’s one of the most common Rheem repairs we make in San Jose, and it’s usually done in under an hour.

Which Rheem Models This Applies To

Nearly every Rheem air conditioner and heat pump made in the last 25 years uses at least one run capacitor, and many use two or three. The classic Rheem families we service regularly across San Jose include the RA13, RA14, RA16, and RA17 air conditioner lines, plus the RP14, RP15, and RP17 heat pump series. The Rheem Prestige and Classic lines are the ones we see most often in Willow Glen, Rose Garden, and Cambrian homes built in the 1990s and 2000s.

Here’s the compatibility gotcha most people don’t know: Rheem units commonly use dual-run capacitors, one cylinder that serves both the compressor and the outdoor fan motor. If your Rheem has a dual-run, you can’t just swap in any capacitor with the same shape. You need to match the microfarad (µF) rating printed on the side, usually something like 45/5 µF or 40/5 µF, plus the voltage rating, typically 370 or 440 volts AC. An undersized capacitor will fail again within weeks, and an oversized one can damage the compressor windings. We read the old capacitor’s label, verify it against the Rheem spec sheet for your model, and install a component that matches both. For Rheem units specifically, we prefer OEM Rheem capacitors or, when a unit is older and the OEM part is hard to source, we use Mars or Amrad aftermarket capacitors built to the same spec. Cold Harbour Heating and Air San Jose is an independent service provider and not affiliated with Rheem, but our techs work on these systems every week.

Signs Your Rheem Capacitor Replacement Is Failing

  • Humming sound, but the fan or compressor won’t start. A failing capacitor can’t deliver the surge current the motor needs. You’ll hear the relay click and a low hum, then nothing. This is the single most common presentation we see in San Jose.
  • AC runs, then shuts off after a few minutes. A weak capacitor lets the motor overheat and trip its internal thermal overload. The system cycles off, cools down, and tries again, which looks a lot like a thermostat problem to an untrained eye.
  • The outdoor unit trips the circuit breaker. A shorted capacitor draws excessive current. If your Rheem condenser keeps popping the breaker in Evergreen or Blossom Valley, a failed capacitor is a leading suspect.
  • The fan spins slowly, or you can spin it by hand to get it going. When a capacitor loses its charge-holding ability, the fan motor loses torque. In some cases a manual push gets it moving, but that’s a stopgap, not a fix.
  • Visible bulging, leaking, or a burnt smell at the capacitor. Capacitors fail mechanically too. A swollen top, oily residue, or a burnt electrical smell means the part is done. We find this during routine tune-ups before the unit ever fails outright, which is the cheapest way to catch it.

Replacement Cost & What’s Included

In San Jose, a Rheem capacitor replacement typically lands between $175 and $340, parts and labor included. A simple single run capacitor swap, like a 5 µF fan capacitor, sits at the lower end. A dual-run capacitor replacement, especially on a Rheem heat pump where we may replace both the run and start capacitors together, lands at the upper end. If the capacitor failure damaged the contactor or a wire terminal, that adds a small amount.

Every quote we give follows the Kingswell Way: a written price before a single tool comes out. That price does not change at the door. The new capacitor is covered by our 365-Day Done Right Promise, and we put that guarantee in writing on the invoice before we leave. If the repair fails inside a full year, we come back to San Jose and correct it at no charge. Victor Mancini checks his job log before every estimate, so we never walk into your house blind.

DIY or Call Us?

A capacitor holds a high-voltage electrical charge even after power is disconnected. It can deliver a serious or fatal shock if handled wrong, and it should never be regarded as a casual swap-and-go job. We say it plainly because we’ve seen the aftermath of well-meaning DIY attempts in San Jose garages: shorted compressor terminals, fried fan motors, and one homeowner who discharged a capacitor into his own hand. If you’re comfortable checking a breaker or clearing debris from around the condenser, that’s reasonable. If you’re opening the electrical panel on a Rheem unit, leave it to someone who does it daily. That’s us. Call (669) 800-4179 and a live person answers, any hour, any day.
